Burrell lifts Phillies over Marlins

Jun 1, 2008 - 10:37 PM By Vince DiGregorio PA SportsTicker Conributing Writer

PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- Pat Burrell snapped a tie with a two-out, two-run double in the seventh inning Sunday as the Philadelphia Phillies took the rubber game of a three-game series with a come-from-behind 7-5 victory over the Florida Marlins.

The win moved the Phillies (33-25) back into first place in the National League East division, one-half game in front of the Marlins (31-24).

"Today is big for us to win this series against a team that's been playing great," Burrell said. "People can say what they want about the Marlins because it's early and all that, but you know what, they have a good team.

"They have a great offense and their pitching has been holding up for them, too. In a lot of ways, we're a pretty similar team. It was important for us to come out and win this series."

Phillies starter Jamie Moyer (6-3) survived a shaky start and lasted seven innings. The soft-tossing lefthander gave up five runs on seven hits, but still managed to remain undefeated in his career against Florida, improving to 8-0.

"I can't worry about what we do offensively, (but) it was a big pick-me up," Moyer said. "You wait (for the offense). You hope, but you can't expect it, (otherwise) you start to take things for granted here. I try to focus on what my job is and to keep us in the game."

The score was tied, 5-5, in the seventh when Burrell stepped to the plate to face Logan Kensing with runners on second and third and two outs. Burrell broke his bat, but still managed to line a 2-2 pitch just fair the left-field line to score Shane Victorino and Ryan Howard.

"(Kensing) throws pretty hard, so you've got to be ready for the fastball," Burrell said. "He threw one kind of down and I was able to squeak it down the line there."

Tom Gordon pitched a scoreless eighth and Brad Lidge closed out the ninth for his 13th save in as many chances.

Mike Jacobs had the bulk of the offense for Florida with two home runs and four RBI. Doug Waechter (0-1) suffered the loss in relief.

The Phillies scored in the first inning off Marlins starter Andrew Miller to take a 1-0 lead. Chase Utley drew a two-out walk, stole second and came around to score on an RBI single by Howard.

Jacobs quickly responded for Florida in the second when he blasted Moyer's first pitch of the inning off an advertising sign in the second deck in right field for a solo home run to tie it.

The Marlins then used a two-out rally in the third to score four runs. Jorge Cantu had an RBI single to center, then Jacobs drove Moyer's next pitch into the right field seats for a three-run home run to give Florida a 5-1 advantage.

"We jumped out, but we couldn't get any add-on runs," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said.

"When you get down like that, you just keep chipping away," Howard said. "Basically, that's all we did. We got hits and just tried to give ourselves a chance to win the game."

Philadelphia added two in the bottom half of the third on a throwing error by Miller and a solo homer by Utley, his major-league leading 20th of the season.

"Utley is just swinging so well right now," Miller said. "I didn't know what to throw him."

The Phillies tied the game in the sixth inning off Waechter when pinch-hitter Geoff Jenkins hit a two-out, two-run home run to tie the game at 5-5.

"It was just one of those things where I got my pitch and didn't miss it," Jenkins said. "There's gonna be situations where, when we come off the bench, you got to come up big."

Miller went five innings and gave up three runs - two earned - on three hits. The lefthander walked four and struck out one batter.
