Williams' layup wins it for Jazz in double overtime

Nov 7, 2010 - 7:16 AM Salt Lake City, UT (Sports Network) - Deron Williams put in the game-winning basket with 6.8 seconds left in the second overtime, spoiling the Clippers' furious rally and giving the Jazz an entertaining 109-107 victory at EnergySolutions Arena.

The Jazz, who trailed by as many as 18 in the game, appeared to have the game in control leading 107-101 in the final minute of the second extra session, but Rasual Butler made consecutive three-pointers around a C.J. Miles miss.

Williams wasted little time after Butler tied it with 13 seconds to play, as he beat his defender off the dribble on the left wing and used his right hand for the go-ahead layup.

Craig Smith was able to get in the lane at the other end, but his attempt fell by the wayside as the Clippers lost their 15th straight game in Utah.

Williams logged 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists, Paul Millsap added 25 points and 13 points, and Andrei Kirilenko and Al Jefferson each scored 18 for the Jazz, who were coming off a loss at Golden State on Friday.

"This would have been a tough one if we would have lost it, I might have cried," Williams said. "I'm glad we won...seriously."

Eric Gordon netted 27 points but appeared to suffer a shoulder injury late in the contest for Los Angeles, which has lost six of seven to start the season. Chris Kaman donated 23 points, while Blake Griffin scored 16 points -- 15 in the first half -- to go with a game-high 17 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter.

"I like our intensity," Griffin said. "We've gotten better and better over the past seven games. We've got to make that next step and continue to grow."

A bucket by Jefferson gave Utah a 103-101 lead with 2:38 to play in the second OT, and after the Clippers missed four straight shots, Williams threw an outlet pass to Kirilenko under Utah's basket.

Butler, hustling back on the play, pulled Kirilenko down by his jersey, resulting in a flagrant foul and two free throws for a 105-101 game with 1:13 left.

Millsap padded the lead by putting back a Williams miss, and Butler and Williams made the final minute a memorable one.

LA led throughout the third, which ended 73-70, but Utah scored seven straight early in the fourth to jump out to its first lead of the game, 77-75, on Williams' layup in transition.

Utah went up 91-84 following a pair of Williams free throws with 1:04 to play, but Gordon kept LA in it with a three-point play and a layup after a steal.

Miles, who was 1-for-13 from the field, air-balled a deep fadeaway from the left wing, and the Clippers called timeout with 12.0 seconds left.

Gordon drove the lane by splitting a pair of defenders at the top of the key and threw down a tomahawk slam over Millsap to tie the game with 6.2 seconds on the clock.

Williams was able to get Gordon in the air on a pump fake with time winding down, but the defender was able to control his body and block the game-tying try. Williams still got off an off-balanced three at the buzzer, but it was short and to the right, sending the game to OT.

Neither team led by more than two in the first extra session. With the score tied, 97-97, Williams was short on an attempt from the left elbow with 20.9 seconds left, but hounded Gordon on his leaner at the buzzer, forcing it high off the backboard for another five minutes of action.

Griffin muscled his way to 13 points in the first quarter, helping the Clippers shoot 13-of-21 in the opening 12 minutes en route to a 35-22 lead.

The margin reached as high as 55-37 following two Kaman free throws late in the second quarter.

The Jazz shot just 37.2 percent in the first half and found themselves down 55-39, but things quickly turned around in the first six minutes of the third quarter, as the hosts scored 13 of the first 14 points to pull within four, 56-52, on a Raja Bell three-pointer.

The Clippers are 1-37 at EnergySolutions Arena...Jefferson also grabbed 10 rebounds for the Jazz, who forced 23 turnovers and had only 12 giveaways...Jazz head coach Jerry Sloan is just three wins away from surpassing Pat Riley (1,195) for third place on the all-time wins list...Eric Bledsoe scored 14 points for LA...LA's Baron Davis missed a fourth straight game with a cyst behind his left knee.
