Spurs break loose, down lowly Wizards

Feb 13, 2011 - 5:37 AM Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Tony Parker set the tone by scoring 14 of his 18 points in the opening quarter, and the Spurs bounced back from their worst offensive output of the season with a resounding 118-94 victory over Washington.

George Hill also totaled 18 points for San Antonio, which surged to a 27-point halftime lead and beat the Wizards for the 11th straight time. The Spurs had more points (72) at the half than they scored all of Friday night in a 77-71 defeat at Philadelphia.

"Coming back from a tough game last night where we didn't shoot the ball well, tonight everything was going in," Parker said. "Sometimes I don't even try to understand basketball. It's weird."

The Spurs moved to 5-2 on their annual Rodeo Road Trip with games upcoming against New Jersey and Chicago. At 45-9, they continue to have the best record in the NBA.

The Wizards, who lost for the ninth time in 10 contests, were paced by Andray Blatche's 16 points and nine rebounds. Cartier Martin also scored 16 in defeat.

"They hit shots. It seemed like they couldn't miss. The rim was wide open for them," Blatche said. "Our intensity level wasn't there the whole game."

Washington, which still hasn't won on the road in 25 games this season, visits Cleveland Sunday evening in an intriguing matchup. The Cavaliers just snapped an NBA-record 26-game losing streak Friday night.

Washington hopes to have some of its players back for Sunday's game. The Wizards were without forwards Rashard Lewis (sore right knee), Al Thornton (dislocated finger) and Josh Howard (sore left knee) Saturday night.

The Spurs got off to an amazing start, hitting 15-of-24 shots in the opening quarter, and ended the game 13-of-25 from three-point range. Parker was the catalyst in the period by making 6-of-7 shots. The veteran guard scored 10 points in a span of less than two minutes, moving his team from a four-point edge to a 24-10 cushion with 4:42 remaining in the stanza. By period's end, the margin was 37-18.

It only got worse for the Wizards. Richard Jefferson's three-ball extended the difference to 57-29, and his layup just more than a minute later made it a 30- point game.

Already ahead by a dominating margin at the half, the Spurs faced little resistance in the final 24 minutes. DeJuan Blair's bucket had the visitors up 98-57 with under four minutes left in the third and it was 101-65 going to the fourth.

The only thing in doubt for the Spurs was if they'd gain their largest margin of victory over the Wizards, which was 31 on two different occasions. The Wizards shot 11-of-21 in the last quarter to keep that record intact.

"It was a mental focus night," Jefferson said. "You combine a good mental focus with knocking down some shots, we were able to get out to a good lead."

The 72 first-half points were a season-best for the Spurs, who won't return home until February 23, when they face the Oklahoma City Thunder...Washington hasn't beaten the Spurs since a 110-95 triumph in D.C. on November 12, 2005...The Wizards, who haven't won on the road since a 106-96 triumph in Boston back on April 9, 2010, are approaching an NBA record. The league mark for most road defeats to start a season belongs to the Dallas Mavericks, who lost 29 straight to open the 1992-93 campaign...The Wizards signed guard Mustafa Shakur to a second 10-day contract on Saturday...Blair had 13 points and 12 rebounds, while JaVale McGee scored 14 for the Wizards...San Antonio ended 58.4 percent from the field.
