Spurs take Rodeo Road Trip into Washington
Feb 12, 2011 - 3:44 PM (Sports Network) - San Antonio's "Rodeo Road Trip" makes its next stop in the nation's capital on Saturday when Gregg Popovich's crew aims to bounce back against the lowly Washington Wizards. The Spurs, who have beaten Washington 10 straight times and sport the NBA's best record at 44-9, fell to 4-2 on the nine-game trek after a 77-71 setback in Philadelphia on Friday, the team's worst offensive performance of the season.
Tim Duncan had 16 points and 13 rebounds for San Antonio, which shot a season- low 33 percent. The Sixers held the other four San Antonio starters to single digits: Tony Parker scored nine points, Manu Ginobili and DeJuan Blair had eight apiece, and Richard Jefferson scored three. Meanwhile, the 71 total points scored by the Spurs was also a season low.
Afterwards Popovich bristled at the suggestion his team was fatigued from its long road trip.
"Just because you lose doesn't mean you're fatigued," the coach said. "We lost by a few points and that doesn't mean we had no effort and they had effort. Both teams busted their a--. Neither team shot well, and in the end they made plays."
San Antonio, which is 19-7 overall on the road, will finish its long trek with visits to New Jersey and Chicago after tonight's contest.
The Wizards, meanwhile, improved to 1-2 on a four-game homestand on Wednesday when Nick Young had 26 points to lead Washington's balanced attack as it halted a season-long eight-game skid with a 100-85 win over Milwaukee.
JaVale McGee notched 16 points and 17 rebounds for the Wizards, who are 14-12 at home but still hold a dreadful 0-25 mark on the road. John Wall and Cartier Martin each had 15 points and Andray Blatche scored 12 and grabbed eight boards in the win.
"It feels very good to win," Wall said. "Hopefully, we can keep it going. Hopefully, we can get another home win and then break that road streak."
Washington hasn't beaten the Spurs since a 110-95 triumph in D.C. on Nov. 12, 2005.
