Randolph, Gay carry Grizzlies over Pistons

Jan 13, 2011 - 5:39 AM Auburn Hills, MI (Sports Network) - Zach Randolph finished with 34 points and 17 rebounds to lead Memphis to a 107-99 win over the Detroit Pistons at the Palace.

Rudy Gay scored 26 points for the Grizzlies, who snapped a two-game slide. Gay and Randolph were a powerful frontcourt combination for Memphis, making a 20- of-30 shots and 20-of-26 free throws.

Ben Gordon posted 25 points to lead Detroit, which has dropped seven of its last nine. Rookie center Greg Monroe added 14 points and 11 boards before fouling out, while Rodney Stuckey had 15 points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Detroit used a 13-2 run in the first quarter take a 21-7 lead, but the Grizzlies made a late run to stay in the game. Gay scored two buckets in the final 26.7 seconds to get Memphis within 26-21.

The Pistons held a 46-43 advantage after a back-and-forth second quarter, but Memphis moved in front during a dominant third quarter.

Detroit still had the lead when Charlie Villanueva sank a three a little under five minutes in. But the Grizzlies scored the next 12 points, including six from Randolph, to take a 66-55 advantage.

"We had a real sense of urgency in the second half, got out in transition and got stops," Randolph said. "Then we started playing in transition and everyone started to contribute."

Memphis made 8-of-13 shots from the field and 13-of-16 from the foul line in the quarter, and held a 73-64 lead moving to the fourth.

"Got to keep the same focus for 48 minutes," Monroe said. "I have lapses sometimes during games. [As] a team we have to keep the energy and focus throughout the whole game, especially coming out in the second half."

The Pistons never let Memphis run away with the game down the stretch, but couldn't narrow their deficit to one possession. They had a chance after Tracy McGrady sank back-to-back baskets, drawing Detroit within 93-86 with 2:49 on the clock.

Gay was called for a foul on McGrady's second bucket, but the Pistons guard missed the free throw. Even after Tayshaun Prince grabbed the rebound, he missed two shots to waste the opportunity.

McGrady's bad pass on the Pistons' next possession gave the ball back to Memphis, and Mike Conley cashed in with a bank shot to restore some cushion.

Randolph scored nine points in the final minute to help secure the Grizzlies' victory.
