Suns blow lead, beat Pacers in OT on Frye's jumper
Feb 27, 2011 - 9:25 PM Indianapolis, IN (Sports Network) - Channing Frye hit a long jumper at the buzzer to lift the Phoenix Suns to a thrilling 110-108 overtime victory over the Indiana Pacers at Conseco Fieldhouse.Tied at 99-all at the end of regulation, a jumper and three-pointer by Frye, sandwiched around a Nash make, gave the Suns the early edge in the extra period.
However, Danny Granger's two free throws capped a 6-0 run to make it a 106-105 game with 52.6 seconds left.
After Marcin Gortat's short hook shot fell to restore Phoenix's three-point advantage, Josh McRoberts' layup and free throw tied things up at 108-all with 23.9 seconds to go.
Still deadlocked with 3.5 seconds left, Phoenix came out of a 20-second timeout and found the winning chemistry.
Grant Hill inbounded the ball along the near sideline at center court, passed to Steve Nash, who quickly dished to Frye on the right wing. Frye released the ball from just in front of the three-point arc just prior to the buzzer sounding and drained the long jumper to give his squad the victory.
"It's a good win for us. That team is playing really, really well," Phoenix head coach Alvin Gentry said about the Pacers.
Hill led all scorers with a season-high 34 points to go with nine rebounds for the Suns, who earned a convincing 110-92 victory at Toronto on Friday and have won three straight and seven of their last nine. Gortat turned in a double- double with 17 points and 11 rebounds off the bench, while Frye ended with 14 points and 10 boards for the victors.
Granger had a team-best 25 points for Indiana, which has dropped two in a row and four of six. A.J. Price went hit 4-of-6 from three-point range and finished with 18 points in a reserve role.
"A very tough loss," Pacers interim head coach Frank Vogel said. "The first half our transition defense and pick and roll defense weren't good enough. We really played a good second half particularly in the fourth quarter. Channing Frye hit a great shot. It was well defended."
Down 82-72 after three quarters, Price started to find his shot from beyond the arc, hitting a pair of three-pointers to pull the Pacers within three with 8:02 remaining, then another to cut the deficit to one at 96-95 with 3:15 to go.
Granger drained a pair of free throws to give the hosts a three-point advantage with 1:03 left, but Hill hit a corner three to tie things at 99-99 with 44.4 seconds remaining.
After both teams came up empty, Granger's off-balanced jumper was off the mark as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime.
Hill paced the Suns with 14 points in the opening quarter to help his squad grab a 33-29 lead after 12 minutes of action.
Aaron Brooks, playing in his first game with Phoenix since being acquired at the trade deadline from Houston, got a finger roll to go to stretch the Suns advantage to double-digits, 47-37, with 7:09 left before the half and the visitors would be up 60-51 at the intermission.
Phoenix dictated things in the third quarter and was ahead 82-72 after three.
