Low's big second half keeps Washington State unbeaten
Nov 26, 2007 - 2:47 AM SPOKANE, Washington (Ticker) -- Derrick Low showed Air Force a timely attack from long range.Low sank three 3-pointers during a decisive second-half run as ninth-ranked Washington State captured a 71-62 victory over Air Force in the Hispanic College Fund Classic on Sunday.
The senior guard finished with 19 points, rebounding from a poor first half where whistled for two quick fouls and missed all four of his shots.
With the Cougars' top playmaker held in check, the Falcons took a 30-26 lead at the break and were up, 37-32, when Anwar Johnson converted a layup with just 3:22 expired in the second half.
However, Daven Harmeling responded with a layup and Low hit the second of his six 3-pointers in the second half as Washington State (6-0) went on a 19-3 run to pull ahead, 51-40, with 7:16 left.
Kyle Weaver added a three-point play and Taylor Rochestie sank four free throws during the burst.
Although the Cougars eventually extended the lead to 14 points, the Falcons (5-2) closed within 68-62 on a 3-pointer by Tim Anderson with 25 seconds left.
Rochestie, who finished with 22 points, had two free throws and Low split a pair in the closing moments.
Weaver chipped in 15 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for Washington State, which shot 48.9 percent (19-of-46) from the field with nine 3-pointers.
Anderson had 15 points and Evan Washington added 14 for Air Force, which lost two of its three games in the regular-season tournament.
The Falcons started strong due to their long-range shooting, making six of their first 12 3-pointers in the first half.
However, the Cougars extended the defense in the second half, limiting the Falcons to 3-of-11 from the arc after the break.
Overall, Washington State limited Air Force to 9-of-26 (34.6 percent) from the field in the second half, following up on a defensive effort where it had not allowed any of their previous three opponents to score more than 55 points.
