Rhode Island, Duquesne put fast starts on line

Jan 13, 2008 - 2:23 PM Duquesne (11-3) at No. 20 Rhode Island (14-2) 2:00 pm EST

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island (Ticker) - Coming off a loss in its Atlantic 10 Conference opener, No. 20 Rhode Island looks to rebound when it hosts Duquesne on Sunday.

The Rams (14-2, 0-1 A-10), who had won nine straight games, had been off to their best start since the 1946-47 team started 15-1. However, Rhode Island dropped a 92-83 decision at No. 22 Dayton on Wednesday.

Jimmy Baron and Will Daniels combined for 51 points in the setback for the Rams, who lost despite shooting 50 percent (32-for-64) from the field, including 39 percent (10-for-26) from the arc.

Rhode Island will look for a better defensive effort against Duquesne than it put together against Dayton, when the Rams allowed season highs in points and field goal shooting percentage (62 percent).

The Dukes (11-3, 1-0) continued their meteoric rise in the win column in Wednesday's 74-62 victory over Fordham. With its 11th victory, Duquesne surpassed its win total from last season.

Reggie Jackson scored 15 points and Shawn James added 14 for Duquesne, which is off to its best start since the 1979-80 team began the season 12-3.
