No. 3 North Carolina hosts No. 2 Duke in key ACC contest

Feb 6, 2008 - 2:27 PM No. 2 Duke (19-1) at No. 3 North Carolina (21-1) 9:00 pm EST

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) - All eyes will be on point guard Ty Lawson on Wednesday when No. 2 Duke squares off against No. 3 North Carolina in an Atlantic Coast Conference game.

The status of Lawson is the primary variable in the matchup of two of college basketball's premier teams. Lawson was on crutches early Tuesday after spraining his left ankle in Sunday's 84-73 overtime victory over Florida State.

The Tar Heels (21-1, 6-1 ACC) have been without Lawson in one game this season - against Ohio State in November. Reserve guard Bobby Frasor played against the Buckeyes, but suffered a season-ending knee injury in December.

If Lawson is unable to go, senior reserve Quentin Thomas and junior swingman could see time at the point against the first-place Blue Devils (19-1, 7-0). Lawson, averaging 13.6 points and 5.7 assists, was unable to participate in team drills on Tuesday.

"We don't know what's going to happen with him," reserve swingman Danny Green said. "Right now everybody's mentally prepared that we're going to play without him."

Junior forward Tyler Hansbrough leads North Carolina with 21.8 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. Senior guard DeMarcus Nelson is at 15.3 points and 5.9 rebounds for Duke, which hosts the Blue Devils on March 8.
