After taking down Memphis, Tennessee turns focus to SEC

Feb 26, 2008 - 4:14 PM No. 1 Tennessee (25-2) at No. 14 Vanderbilt (23-4) 9:00 pm EST

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) - Ranked at No. 1 for the first time in school history, Tennessee faces another difficult challenge when it visits No. 14 Vanderbilt on Tuesday.

On Saturday, the Volunteers (25-2, 11-1 SEC East) ended then-No. 1 Memphis' (26-1) pursuit of perfection and snapped the Tigers' 47-game home winning streak with a 66-62 victory.

Tyler Smith scored 16 points in the win, including the go-ahead basket with 26 seconds to play. Leading scorer Chris Lofton netted just seven points on 2-of-11 shooting as Tennessee extended its own winning streak to nine games.

But despite an 80-60 victory over the Commodores earlier this season, playing in Vanderbilt should be another tough task for Tennessee to handle.

The Commodores (23-4, 8-4 East) have won have won six straight games and are a perfect 17-0 on their home floor this season.

Vanderbilt is coming off an 86-74 victory over Georgia on Saturday, thanks to 29 points from Shan Foster. The senior guard is second in the conference in scoring at 19.3 points per game.

Tennessee and Vanderbilt are the two highest scoring teams in the SEC, with the Volunteers averaging 83.9 and the Commodores at 80.8 per game.
