Marquette hopes to slow Georgetown's Big East title quest

Mar 1, 2008 - 11:28 AM No. 10 Georgetown (23-4) at No. 21 Marquette (21-6) 2:00 pm EST

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- No. 21 Marquette would like nothing better than to complicate 10th-ranked Georgetown's plans for the regular-season title in the Big East when it hosts a matchup between the teams Saturday.

The Hoyas (23-4, 13-3) currently are tied with Louisville for first place in the conference with two games to play. Georgetown has won three straight, including Wednesday's 64-52 home victory over St. John's.

Senior center Roy Hibbert leads the Hoyas, who are 5-3 in road conference games, at 13.4 points and 6.4 rebounds per contest. Saturday's tilt is the last road game of the season for Georgetown, which closes out its conference schedule March 8 against Louisville.

The Golden Eagles (21-6, 11-5) are in fifth in the Big East. The top four teams gain automatic berths into the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

Marquette extended its winning streak to five games Monday, when it posted an 85-75 triumph at Villanova. The Golden Eagles are 7-1 in conference home games and 14-1 overall on its own court.

Junior guard Dominic James is averaging 13.6 points for Marquette, while sophomore forward Lazar Hayward and junior guard Jerel McNeal each are at 13.4 points per contest. Hayward leads the Golden Eagles with 6.3 rebounds per game.
