Upset-minded West Virginia faces Xavier

Mar 27, 2008 - 1:54 PM No. 7 West Virginia (26-10) at No. 3 Xavier (29-6) 7:10 pm EDT

PHOENIX (Ticker) - West Virginia is no stranger to upsets or the Sweet 16.

Seventh-seeded West Virginia looks to continue its run in the NCAA Tournament on Thursday when it takes on No. 3 Xavier in the West Regional.

The Mountaineers advanced to their third Sweet 16 in four seasons on Saturday on the strength of a 73-67 upset win over second-seeded Duke in the second round.

Joe Alexander had 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead West Virginia, which posted a 10-point victory over No. 10 Arizona in the opening round.

With the win against Duke, coach Bob Huggins improved his all-time record to 22-15 in 16 career appearances in the NCAAs.

West Virginia needs to use its edge in experience to get past Xavier, which is making just its third trip to the Sweet 16.

The Musketeers, who reached the Elite Eight in 2004, rebounded from a hard-fought come-from-behind win over No. 14 seed Georgia in the opening round with a decisive 85-78 victory over No. 6 Purdue on Saturday.

Senior Drew Lavender scored 18 points and added nine assists while junior C.J. Anderson contributed 18 points and seven rebounds to pace Xavier against Purdue.
