Record-setting Fazekas paces Nevada

Nov 19, 2006 - 5:24 AM RENO, Nevada (Ticker) -- Nick Fazekas continues to rewrite the record books at Nevada.

Fazekas scored 20 points to lead the 23rd-ranked Wolf Pack to an 82-63 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff.

With the performance, the 6-11 Fazekas became the all-time leading scorer in school history with 1,880 points, surpassing Edgar Jones. Fazekas already had surpassed Jones as the leading shot blocker at Nevada.

"It is a tremendous accomplishment to score more points than anyone here," Nevada coach Mark Fox said. "Nick has been a phenomenal player for us. He's a terrific kid and I'm really, really proud of what he's done."

A Wooden Award candidate and two-time reigning WAC Player of the Year, Fazekas shot 9-of-11 from the floor and grabbed 17 rebounds to carry the Wolf Pack to their 11th consecutive home victory.

"It means a lot to me," Fazekas said. "To be able to put my name in the record books, it's special for me. I talked to my dad before the game and he said not to put pressure on myself."

Fazekas gave an early indication it would be a special night when he scored eight consecutive points, including back-to-back 3-pointers, to spark the Wolf Pack to an 11-2 start less than four minutes into the game.

Marcelus Kemp, who scored 15 points for Nevada (3-0), hit two 3-pointers to push the lead to 20-6 midway though the half en route to a 41-22 lead at the break.

Fazekas had a double-double in the first half alone with 12 points and 14 rebounds.

"It's a good accomplishment for him. I'm glad he got the record," Kemp said of Fazekas. "We got the win and that is the biggest thing."

Ramon Sessions scored 13 points for Nevada, which shot 52 percent (29-of-56) and was 9-of-19 from the arc.

William Byrd scored 19 points and had eight rebounds for the Golden Lions (0-2), who shot 40 percent (23-of-58). He was joined in double figures by Terrance Calvin and Jason Frierson with 17 and 14 points, respectively.

Nevada outrebounded Arkanas-Pine Bluff, 44-25.
