Seton Hall shocks Georgetown for first Big East win

Jan 25, 2009 - 9:32 PM SOUTH ORANGE, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Perhaps some of the success of Seton Hall's 1989 Final Four team has rubbed off on the current squad.

Jeremy Hazell scored 23 points Sunday despite missing all 10 of his 3-point attempts as the Pirates earned their first Big East Conference win of the season with a 65-60 upset of 14th-ranked Georgetown.

The victory came on the same day Seton Hall honored its Final Four club of 20 years ago. At halftime, P.J. Carlesimo, the coach of the 1989 club, addressed the crowd at the Prudentuial Center.

Hazell finished just 5-of-20 from the field, but was 13-of-17 from the free-throw line, including two clinching free throws that made it 65-60 with nine seconds remaining.

Robert Mitchell added 20 points for the Pirates (10-9, 1-6 Big East), who prevailed despite going 0-for-13 from beyond the arc.

The loss extended Georgetown's slide to three games, as the Hoyas also were plagued by poor shooting.

Freshman Greg Monroe scored 17 points for the Hoyas (12-6, 3-4), who finished just 3-of-23 from 3-point range, including four misses in the final minute.
