Houston names Hughey head women's basketball coach
Apr 22, 2014 - 1:57 AM Houston, TX (SportsNetwork.com) - The University of Houston announced the hiring of former Florida State assistant coach Ronald Hughey as the next head coach of the women's basketball program on Monday.Hughey becomes the seventh head coach in program history and replaces interim head coach Wade Scott, who took over after Todd Buchanan resigned abruptly back in December due to personal reasons.
"As we went through this coaching search, we spoke with many different people who knew Hughey well, on and off the court," Houston vice president for intercollegiate athletics Mack Rhoades said. "Coach Hughey's energy, excitement, and commitment to his student-athletes were apparent from our very first meeting. He is one of the rising stars in this industry and we're excited to have him join our University of Houston Athletics family."
Hughey has been on six consecutive NCAA Tournament coaching staffs with four different schools in Florida State, Texas, Rutgers and UCF, while helping lead five schools to seven postseason appearances in 10 years as a Division I coach.
The Cougars went a woeful 6-25 last season, culminating in a 45-point loss to Louisville in the quarterfinals of the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
