South Florida tries to respond at surprising UConn

Oct 27, 2007 - 11:33 AM No. 11 South Florida (6-1) at Connecticut (6-1) 3:30 pm EDT

EAST HARTFORD, Connecticut (Ticker) -- South Florida coach Jim Leavitt will do his best this weekend to ensure that every Big East Conference team has a loss in league play.

Leavitt's 11th-ranked Bulls try to bounce back from their first defeat of the season when they visit first-place Connecticut in Big East action.

South Florida (6-1, 1-1 Big East) was ranked second in the country before falling at Rutgers last Thursday night, 30-27.

The game was not settled until Bulls quarterback Matt Grothe was intercepted with 49 seconds left.

The Bulls had not allowed a 100-yard rusher all season before allowing Ray Rice to break through for 181 yards.

Connecticut (6-1, 2-0) is the only undefeated team in conference play. But the Huskies only remained perfect in the league because of a controversial 21-17 home win over Louisville last Friday.

UConn trailed, 7-0, early in the second half before Larry Taylor scored on a 74-yard punt return after signaling for a fair catch. Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese admitted it was a "terrible" mistake.

Still, the Huskies trailed, 17-7, before rallying for two fourth-quarter touchdowns. They took the lead for the first time on Andre Dixon's five-yard run with 1:32 left.

USF posted a 38-16 home win over UConn last year. The Huskies won here two years ago, 15-10.
