Lynch, Bills run past winless Dolphins
Nov 11, 2007 - 10:59 PM MIAMI (Ticker) -- Marshawn Lynch ran for a touchdown and a two-point conversion. In the process, the rookie ran the Buffalo Bills' winning streak to four games.Lynch scored on a 3-yard run and also raced for the game-tying two-point conversion before setting up Rian Lindell's game-winning 34-yard field goal with 48 seconds remaining Sunday as the Bills defeated the winless Miami Dolphins, 13-10.
Kept under wraps for most of the day, Lynch finished with 61 yards rushing for Buffalo (5-4), which won four in a row for the first time since the 2004 season.
"I am not sure I've ever seen a better run than that one," Bills coach Dick Jauron said of Lynch's battle to get in the end zone on the conversion. "We aren't dominating teams, but we are finding ways to win games."
Miami (0-9) is mired in a franchise-record 12-game losing streak which dates to last season.
"Everytime somebody gets a long run or a big pass, something goes wrong," Dolphins defensive tackle Keith Traylor said. "We can't catch a break. It's just so frustrating right now. You can't put it in words." Still, the Dolphins, coming off a bye week after playing the Giants in London, dominated in the statistics and led until the fourth quarter.
"It means a lot," quarterback J.P. Losman said of coming back. "They (the Dolphins) showed up and as far as I'm concerned - they were good. They had good schemes, good players, good effort and they did an excellent job. For us to come back (was big)."
With the Dolphins leading, 10-2, Lynch powered his way over the left tackle for the 3-yard score to cap a 10-play, 66-yard drive with just under 10 minutes remaining.
Lynch followed the same path and extended the ball over the goal line on the two-point conversion, tying the game at 10-10.
He injured his left ankle late in the game, and was limping in the locker room. The Bills will know more about his status on Monday, but as he left for treatment without speaking to the media, he said, "I'll be fine."
Some Buffalo players said they got a bit of extra motivation after hearing the Dolphins do some trash-talking both earlier in the week and during the game.
"We heard some things before the game that (were) hard to believe," said defensive lineman Chris Kelsay, who sacked quarterback Cleo Lemon for a safety for Buffalo's first points. "They were counting their chickens before they were hatched, acting like they knew they were going to beat us.
"One of their players said, 'How is it going to feel to get beat by an 0-8 team?' Stuff like that. I can't believe that an 0-8 team would say that, but now they are an 0-9 team."
Miami quarterback Cleo Lemon ran in from 5 yards out to cap an 18-play, 80-yard drive which consumed most of the third quarter. The drive took 9 minutes, 45 seconds.
"It's tough ... we had them on the ropes," Lemon said. "We were taking it to them the entire game. Lemon's four rushing TDs lead the league for quarterbacks.
Jesse Chatman rushed for 124 yards on 27 carries for Miami, which owned a decided advantage in time of possession. The Dolphins held the ball for nearly 37 minutes.
Miami's Jay Feely kicked a 38-yard field goal after an impressive opening drive. Chatman burst through the middle of the line untouched en route to 23-yard gain from midfield.
But the drive stalled, and Feely connected on his 14th field goal of the season to give the Dolphins a 3-0 lead.
The points were the first Miami had scored in the first quarter in its last three games. The Dolphins had been outscored, 31-0, over that span.
Miami had a solid drive developing on its ensuing possession, but Chatman was stuffed for a two-yard loss on a 4th-and-1 at Buffalo's 34-yard line.
"This is an incredible team," said cornerback Jabari Greer, who knocked away Lemon's final desperation attempt on fourth down. "The resolve, the excitement we're playing with. Just going out there and playing, it's fun being part of this team."
Miami's Jason Taylor, last year's NFL Defensive Player of the Year, injured his ankle early in the third quarter. He did not return. Dolphins middle linebacker Zach Thomas missed the game with migraine headaches.
"Luck's not really on our side right now," Taylor said. "Lynch is a good runner. He's a strong kid. I thought we did a good job playing the run. We wanted to put the ball in Losman's hands and put some pressure on him. Obviously, it wasn't enough."
