Glencross scores twice, Flames beat Maple Leafs
Jan 3, 2010 - 4:34 AM CALGARY, Alberta(AP) -- Curtis Glencross is fitting in quite nicely with Jarome Iginla and Daymond Langkow on the Calgary Flames' top line.Glencross scored the go-ahead goal on a power play midway through the second period and added an empty-netter in Calgary's 3-1 victory over Toronto on Saturday night.
Iginla had a goal and two assists, and Miikka Kiprusoff made 24 saves to help the Flames extend their winning streak to four games.
"We've had a pretty consistent work ethic through the whole lineup and that's how you get success, you need four lines to play the game," said Glencross, who has three goals in two games after snapping a 10-game drought.
Jason Blake scored for Toronto. The Maple Leafs have lost five of their last six.
"We didn't win any battles for loose pucks," Toronto coach Ron Wilson said. "The other team is working hard, and desperate, and when you're not as desperate as they are on the power play, you're not going to be very effective."
After Blake opened the scoring in the first period, Calgary scored twice in 52-second span in the second and outshot the Maple Leafs 18-7 in the period.
Iginla tied it at 10:35, capping off an eventful sequence that began after Toronto defenseman Mike Komisarek lost the puck in a collision with Iginla in front of the Maple Leafs' net. Daymond Langkow pounced on the turnover, letting go a dangerous shot that goalie Jonas Gustavsson only got a piece of. The puck was about to bounce into the net when Toronto defenseman Tomas Kaberle failed to clear the puck off the goal line, knocking it right onto the stick of Iginla for his 21st goal.
"We're just trying to get shots, hound them, get a forecheck, and as a line, we've been getting some chances and it's nice to see them go in tonight," Iginla said.
Glencross gave the Flames the lead at 11:27 on a power play.
Iginla slipped a pass out to Glencross at the top of the faceoff circle and Glencross snapped a shot past Gustavsson on the glove side.
"There are some great players over there and you just have to be aware when they're on the ice and limit the turnovers," Blake said. "When Iginla's on the ice, you have to know where he's at and where's his next move."
NOTES: Throughout the game, chants of "Go Leafs Go!" broke out before the home fans eventually drowned them out with "Go Flames Go!" cheers. ... Gustavsson made 32 saves. ... The Flames wore their old red and yellow jerseys and special guests included the original Hansen brothers from the 1977 movie "Slapshot". ... Toronto has lost five straight in Calgary.
