Final - 2OT
Pavelski wins it in a shootout
Dec 29, 2009 - 7:13 AM SAN JOSE, Calif.(AP) -- Devin Setoguchi got the message, became productive, and helped San Jose win its fifth straight. He scored for the Sharks, who got one goal from Joe Pavelski in regulation and the only one in the shootout to give the San Jose Sharks a 3-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes on Monday night.
"It's no secret he has been sent a message from the coaching staff," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said of Setoguchi. "He needs to pick up his game. He played pretty well the other night against Anaheim but we didn't think he deserved a promotion. This time he came and had a couple of good early shifts. Now it's up to him. I don't care where he plays but we need him to play."
Setoguchi's early effort led to additional ice time. He understands what needs to be done.
"You have to work hard and do the little things that help win hockey games," Setoguchi said. "When do you do that, you get rewarded. Now I have to keep doing it."
Shane Doan and Matthew Lombardi scored for the Coyotes, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.
Phoenix goalie Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 36 shots, including all 19 he faced in the third period.
"It was a great game, a fun game," Bryzgalov said. "There were lots of scoring chances for both sides. We were playing against a good team and that's what you're going to see, a good game."
San Jose goalie Evgeni Nabokov, who will join Bryzgalov on the Russian Olympic team, made 31 saves.
"Both teams played hard," Nabokov said. "There were a lot of scrums, a lot of hitting and a lot of battles around the net."
Coyotes' Keith Yandle hit the crossbar during a power play in overtime.
"Your mindset is always to kill the penalty," Nabokov said. "The boys did a good job of sacrificing their bodies. That's why we were able to kill that penalty."
Setoguchi, who has two goals and an assist in his last five games after not recording a point in his previous 10, put in a rebound of Frazer McLaren's shot to give San Jose a 1-0 lead less three minutes into the game.
"It was pretty simple," Setoguchi said. "I went to the net, found the rebounds and put in into the net. We have to find a way to hold onto leads."
Pavelski made it 2-0 with 14:43 remaining in the second period. He stole a pass intended for Robert Lang during a Coyotes' power play, outskated everybody to the net and beat Bryzgalov to the upper left corner.
"You think it's never going to happen on a power play but sometimes those things happen," Pavelski said. "It's always god to finish your opportunities."
Lombardi redirected Ed Jovanovski's shot into the net to put Phoenix on the scoreboard midway through the second period. Martin Hanzal set up Jovanovski with a nice backhanded pass after Petr Prucha won it along the boards.
Doan scored his 10th goal of the season, and the third in his last five games, late in the second period to tie the game at 2-all. He was in perfect position to knock in Scottie Upshall's rebound off Nabokov's pads.
"We made a couple of mistakes to fall behind but I liked the way our guys climbed back into it," Coyotes coach Dave Tippett said. "There were chances to win it both ways, we hit the crossbar in overtime, but the goaltending was good both ways."
NOTES: Coyotes' F Vernon Fiddler returned to the ice after missing three games with a lower body injury but then left after a few minutes. James Vandermeer was a late scratch but Tippett said it was nothing serious. ... Doan played his 75th career game against the Sharks, matching his second-most against any team. ... Sharks' D Rob Blake has 46 points in 85 games against the Coyotes with his 19 goals being his most against any NHL team. ... Sharks' C Joe Thornton had his seven-game points streak end. ... San Jose F Patrick Marleau has one goal in his last 19 games against the Coyotes. ... The Sharks outshot Phoenix 19-6 in the third period.
