Surging 'Canes take on rested Flyers

Nov 11, 2010 - 4:09 PM (Sports Network) - The Carolina Hurricanes will try to continue their offensive surge this evening, when they welcome the well-rested Philadelphia Flyers to the RBC Center.

The Hurricanes have exploded for 21 goals while winning three of their last four games. Carolina improved to 8-7-0 on the season with a blowout victory over visiting Edmonton on Tuesday.

Carolina will be after its first three-game winning streak of the season tonight. The Hurricanes haven't posted three victories in a row since a seven-game run that spanned last year's Winter Olympic break, lasting from February 5-March 4.

However, the Hurricanes haven't had much success against the Flyers recently, losing seven straight, eight of nine and 12 of the last 14 encounters. That includes a 3-2 win by the Flyers in Philadelphia earlier this month.

The 'Canes unloaded on the Oilers earlier this week, pounding Edmonton by a 7-1 score. Joe Corvo scored a pair of goals and Jeff Skinner had a goal and two assists for the hosts.

Sergei Samsonov, Chad LaRose, Erik Cole and Patrick Dwyer added a goal apiece, while captain Eric Staal dished out four assists for the victors.

"It seemed like every bounce went our way this game, but we earned them," Skinner said. "We came out hard right from the first shift."

The Hurricanes did indeed work fast, scoring four times on the first eight shots sent Edmonton goaltender Nikolai Khabibulin's way. Khabibulin was pulled just over seven minutes into the game. At the other end of the ice, Cam Ward stopped 21-of-22 shots to claim the easy win.

Tonight marks the third and final test of a three-game homestand for Carolina. The club is 4-2-0 as the host this season.

The Flyers had a six-game winning streak snapped when they last played Sunday in Washington, but Philly did earn a point for the seventh straight game after falling to the Capitals in overtime. Mike Green scored a power- play goal 29 seconds into the extra session to Washington the 3-2 decision.

Nikolay Zherdev and Ville Leino lit the lamp for Philadelphia and Sergei Bobrovsky, who was bidding to become the first rookie netminder since Pelle Lindbergh in 1982-83 to win seven consecutive starts, stopped 36 shots in defeat.

"The heart was there to go out and compete and battle the way you need to in order to be successful," said Flyers head coach Peter Laviolette. "But at the end of the night, if we're on our game, we're doubling up in scoring chances and doubling up in shots on net. That didn't happen tonight."

Bobrovsky is expected to get the start again this evening. The 22-year-old Russian earned a victory over the Hurricanes back on November 1 by stopping 26-of-28 shots.

The Flyers, who have won six straight and eight of its last nine in Carolina, are 3-1-2 on the road this year.
