Penguins, Canucks set to do battle in Steel City

Nov 17, 2010 - 4:14 PM (Sports Network) - A pair of clubs aiming to rebound after overtime losses meet tonight in Pittsburgh, as the Penguins host the Vancouver Canucks at CONSOL Energy Center.

The Canucks dropped a 4-3 decision in Buffalo on Monday night, dropping the club to 8-1-2 in its last 11 contests. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, was handed a 3-2 setback on Monday by the visiting New York Rangers.

Buffalo claimed the recent victory thanks to a Tyler Myers' goal with 23 seconds left in overtime. Canucks defenseman Dan Hamhuis turned the puck over to Myers, who skated in and fired a wrist shot past Cory Schneider for the win.

Daniel Sedin had a goal and two assists for the Canucks and Henrik Sedin added three helpers. Alexander Edler and Mikael Samuelsson also tallied while Schneider made 35 saves in taking the loss.

"They really park themselves in front of the net ... There were some ones on the power play that ended up reaching me that I didn't see," Schneider said of the Sabres.

Roberto Luongo is expected to be back in net for Vancouver tonight after receiving a rare night off on Monday. Luongo is 13-7-1 with a tie in 23 lifetime starts against the Pens.

Tonight's tilt marks the close of a five-game road trip for Vancouver, which is 2-1-1 on the swing and 4-4-2 overall as the guest this season. The Canucks will close November on a four-game homestand, beginning with Saturday's test against Chicago.

The Penguins were dealt a 3-2 setback in a wild game Monday against the Rangers. Ryan Callahan scored the game-winner off a nice feed from Brandon Dubinsky with 1:22 remaining in overtime, ending a game that saw a flurry of goals come in the closing minutes of regulation.

The Rangers led 1-0 heading into the final minutes of regulation, but Pittsburgh scored twice in a 38-second span to take a 2-1 lead with 1:53 left in the third period. However, Marc Staal scored the tying goal for New York just 27 seconds later to send the game to OT. All told, three goals were scored in a 55-second span.

Chris Kunitz and Matt Cooke scored the late goals for Pittsburgh, which fired 39 shots on New York goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. Sidney Crosby added an assist to push his point streak to five games.

"[Lundqvist] was solid, but I don't think he made a ton of second saves," Crosby said. "We had good quality shots, but I don't think he took anything away from us."

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 22-of-25 shots in the Penguins' second loss in five games (3-1-1). Pittsburgh also fell to 3-5-1 on home ice this season.

Penguins winger Tyler Kennedy missed the last game with an illness and is questionable for this evening's game.

Vancouver has won two straight and seven of its last eight meetings against the Pens. The Canucks have also won four in a row in the Steel City, but tonight will mark their first game at Pittsburgh's new arena.
