Kings edge Blue Jackets in shootout

Feb 17, 2011 - 5:52 AM Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Jarret Stoll scored the lone goal in the shootout to give the surging Los Angeles Kings a 4-3 victory over Columbus at Nationwide Arena.

Stoll shot a simple wrister into top right corner in the second round, and Jonathan Quick turned away Kristian Huselius' shot to secure the win.

Drew Doughty, Andrei Loktionov and Justin Williams scored for the Kings, who improved to 8-0-2 in their last 10 games. Quick ended with 21 saves.

"He's very good. He gets very focused on the challenge at hand," Kings head coach Terry Murray said of Quick. "It's big for us, especially in games like this."

Kris Russell, Rick Nash and Jakub Voracek lit the lamp for the Blue Jackets, who had a two-game win streak snapped, but have earned points in 11 of their last 14 games (8-3-3). Mathieu Garon surrendered three goals on 29 shots in the loss.

"That was a big point," Russell said. "It would have been nice to get the win, but we battled back to send it into overtime."

Doughty put LA in front, 3-2, just over six minutes into the final frame.

With the Kings working the perimeter, Michal Handzus cycled it to the point where the defenseman slapped a rising shot that sailed over Garon's glove for Doughty's eighth goal of the season.

Columbus tied it for a third and final time only two ticks after it pulled Garon with 1:23 left in regulation. Voracek's slapper from the point was stopped by Quick, but Russell was there to clean up the big rebound from in tight to send the game into overtime.

Both teams registered just two shots in the scoreless overtime.

LA got the scoring started almost 17 minutes into the game.

Loktionov sent a shot from the left circle, which rebounded toward the far side. Williams was there for the rebound scramble and backhanded it in.

The Blue Jackets tied it with 1:26 left in the first when Voracek, from the left circle, finished a Derek MacKenzie cross-ice pass.

The Kings were back on top, 2-1, at the 13:05 mark of the second period with the hard work of Matt Greene. After having several shots stoned, he handled the puck from the end boards and centered it to the slot where Loktionov swept it in.

But Columbus responded once more just 69 seconds later to knot it up at 2-2 following a dump pass into the left corner. The puck fortuitously clipped off MacKenzie's skate and slid toward a streaking Nash, who ripped a shot high past Quick from the left slot.

Game Notes

Columbus forwards Derick Brassard and R.J. Umberger both left the game in the first period due to injuries. Umberger returned in the second period, while Brassard did not re-enter the game...MacKenzie and Nash both had two assists in the loss. Nash has eight points in his last five games...LA has taken eight out of 12 in the series and has won four of the last six games in Ohio.
