Douglas leaves NRL Titans for St Helens
Oct 5, 2016 - 12:22 AM Veteran forward Luke Douglas has been released from the final year of his NRL contract with Gold Coast to continue his career in the English Super League.Douglas has signed a three-year deal with St Helens, bringing to a close an NRL career that will be remembered for the front-rower's remarkable durability.
The 30-year-old holds an NRL record for an unbroken streak of matches, playing 215 successive games between his debut for Cronulla in 2006 and his round 23, 2014 appearance for the Titans.
He played 146 games for Cronulla before joining the Titans in 2012.
Douglas made 117 appearances for Gold Coast, winning the club's best and fairest award last season,
"After a tough period the club is moving forward and it was great to finally play in the finals for the Titans this season," Douglas said.
Douglas joins David Mead and Nathan Friend as high-profile and long-serving Titans players who won't be at the club next year.
But Douglas is adamant the Titans are in good shape to make another run towards the NRL top eight in 2017.
"I think we have the squad to do that again next season," he said.
Douglas is expected to represent Scotland in the end-of-season Four Nations tournament before linking with St Helens.
Saints coach Keiron Cunningham said Douglas' experience would be invaluable.
"Luke is dynamic, tough running front-rower who will bring top-level NRL experience to our pack next season. His leadership will be important to our younger players," Cunningham said.
