Buyer to get sneak peak at Titans coach
Sep 20, 2017 - 6:28 AM Potential Gold Coast owners will be given a sneak peak at the NRL club's final shortlist of coaches before a replacement for Neil Henry is appointed. The sale of the NRL-owned club and the search for a new head coach are both in full flight at the Titans.
Titans boss Graham Annesley said while a potential owner would not have the power to veto a call on a certain coach, they would be given the chance to have their say on the matter before buying the club.
The chief executive hopes to name the new coach by mid-October, having started the interview process last week.
On Wednesday, NRL CEO Todd Greenberg anticipated the sale of the club would be finalised by year's end, and that it would be a mistake to delay one project in favour of the other.
"I think what rugby league tells you is you can't put your foot on the stop button at any moment," Greenberg said.
Annesley said as both processes progressed, those in the running to own the club would be given more information on the prospective coach.
"At the appropriate time, there will be some visibility and an opportunity to comment before any final decision is made," Annesley told AAP.
"If they (potential owners) have any strong views, the NRL will pass them on to us."
Coach interviews have been put on hold this week with head of the selection committee Geoff Jones overseas.
Annesley will not say if he has been in contact with sacked Canterbury coach Des Hasler about the vacancy, although it is understood a move north is unlikely.
The opening at Canterbury will make life more difficult for the Titans, though, with the coveted Sydney posting sure to appeal to the same coaches in line for the Gold Coast position.
Ipswich coaching brothers Shane and Ben Walker have indicated their interest in a NRL gig, while NRL assistants Jason Demetriou (Brisbane) and Todd Payten (North Queensland) have been talked up as worthy.
Penrith NSW Cup team mentor Garth Brennan says he is ready for a promotion, while former Manly coach Geoff Toovey could also be wooed home from English Super League club Bradford.
Former Titans board members Darryl Kelly and Rebecca Frizelle head a Gold Coast bid team, vying for the club's ownership with the Brisbane Bombers and North Sydney Bears consortiums.
It is understood there is at least one more Gold Coast group preparing a bid to buy the club.
