Dynamo down Whitecaps for first win of season

Apr 11, 2011 - 1:22 AM Houston, TX (Sports Network) - Cam Weaver, Bobby Boswell and Will Bruin scored and the Houston Dynamo downed Vancouver Whitecaps FC, 3-1, on Sunday night at Robertson Stadium for their first win of the season in Major League Soccer.

Weaver and Boswell scored in a five-minute span late in the first half, which also included Camilo's third goal of the season for Vancouver, and Bruin added the clinching goal in the 76th minute.

Houston (1-1-2) had scored just two goals in its first three matches, but used the win to join a pack of four teams on five points in the Eastern Conference.

Vancouver (1-2-2) is winless in four straight since opening the season with an impressive 4-2 win over Toronto FC and is level with two teams on five points in the Western Conference.

Houston opened the scoring in the 37th, as Boswell headed a pass from the near side to the far post off a corner and Weaver poked the ball into the goal from just a few yards out for his second goal of the season.

Vancouver responded just one minute later when Davide Chiumiento played Camilo into the right side of the area, and the Whitecaps striker made a nice turn to open space and fire home from close range.

Boswell restored Houston's lead in the 42nd, running onto a left-wing cross by Danny Cruz to direct a first-time shot into the left side from the edge of the six-yard box for his first goal of the season.

Bruin added the final goal when he beat Whitecaps goalie Jay Nolly to the ball just outside the box, rounded the goalie and slotted into an empty net for his first of the season.

Vancouver will try to end its slide on Saturday at Chivas USA, one of just two winless squads left in MLS. Houston hosts the New England Revolution on April 17 in a rematch of the 2006 and 2007 MLS Cup finals, both won by the Dynamo.
