Dallas inch closer to top spot with win over Chivas

Aug 1, 2011 - 1:13 AM Frisco, TX (Sports Network) - FC Dallas moved within three points of first place in the Western Conference by defeating Chivas USA 1-0 at Pizza Hut Park on Sunday.

FC Dallas was the far more dangerous team in the first half, forcing Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy into making several key saves early on.

Dallas finally got off the mark in the 26th minute when a long ball into the box was brought down Ruben Luna.

Luna passed the ball back to Martin Chavez who fired a shot that needed a deflection to take it past Kennedy.

FC Dallas nearly doubled its lead in the 40th minute when George John headed a set piece delivery off the post.

The Texas club continued to apply the pressure to Chivas, creating some golden scoring opportunities in the second half.

Chavez thought he had bagged his second goal of the game in the 59th minute, but he was ruled offside by the assistant referee.

Despite the numerous scoring chances, FC Dallas was unable to build on its one-goal advantage.

It proved to be a moot point, as the final whistle sounded to give Dallas its 12th win of the season.

Both teams return to Major League Soccer action on August 6th, as Chivas (6-8-8) head to Gillette Stadium to play the New England Revolution, while FC Dallas (12-5-6) will travel to The Home Depot Center to face the first place Los Angeles Galaxy.
