Real remains perfect with win over New England
Apr 10, 2011 - 2:20 AM Foxborough, MA (Sports Network) - Chris Schuler and Paulo Araujo Jr. scored as Real Salt Lake continued its perfect start in Major League Soccer with a 2-0 win over the New England Revolution on Saturday at Gillette Stadium.Schuler scored his first goal of the season in the 28th minute and Araujo Jr. added his second goal of the season two minutes after halftime for Real Salt Lake (3-0-0), which has outscored its three opponents 7-1 this season.
New England (1-1-3) ended the game with just nine men after Shalrie Joseph and Pat Phelan were sent off in the second half.
Real advanced to the CONCACAF Champions League final earlier this week despite a 2-1 loss to Costa Rica's Deportivo Saprissa, winning the series on aggregate of 3-2 after a 2-0 win in the first leg.
Coach Jason Kreis rested a number of starters against New England, but Schuler provided the early offense when he met a corner kick on the near side and sent a header past Revolution goalie Bobby Shuttleworth.
Araujo Jr. added his goal two minutes after halftime, and Real settled in with the two-goal lead to help Kyle Reynish get a shutout in his first start of the season in goal.
Joseph earned a straight red card in the 70th after shoving Real Salt Lake's Kyle Beckerman in the face, and Phelan followed him to the showers in the last five minutes after a bad foul.
New England lost its first match of the season, but has just one win so far in five matches and is winless in three straight.
The Revolution visit the Houston Dynamo on April 17 in a rematch of the 2006 and 2007 MLS Cup finals, both won by Houston. Real hosts the defending MLS Cup champion Colorado Rapids on Wednesday.
