'Quakes in search of home win against Chivas USA

Apr 22, 2011 - 9:08 PM Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - San Jose coach Frank Yallop admitted after last weekend's 3-0 defeat to Red Bull New York that "I don't mind losing, but you've got to lose in the right manner."

He followed with "not just kind of getting pummeled for 90 minutes." Yallop's summary of last week's game was correct, but he also admitted "it's five games we've had and it?s one that's been terrible.

"The other four," he continued, "I've been happy with."

The Earthquakes (1-2-2) will try to regain previous form Saturday, when Chivas USA visits Buck Shaw Stadium.

"I think that we'll find out what we're made of mentally, because we've got to now perform. We've got to win against Chivas," Yallop said.

San Jose's target this week is getting its first home win, as it has two draws and a loss in its first three matches at Buck Shaw. Winless Chivas presents an opportunity Yallop's side cannot waste.

Although the Earthquakes have just five goals through five matches, it had two in two of its previous three matches. The two times the club has not scored: a 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake and last week's loss to New York.

Yallop felt it was important to try and get the opening goal against Chivas to take some pressure off this week, and then a better overall performance would follow.

"I like to think we're going to come out flying and try to get that first goal that's eluded us at home so far in the three games," Yallop said. "We've got to make sure we break them down, score our goal, or score first if we can and get a result."

Chivas is the only other team in Major League Soccer without a home victory as Robin Fraser's club is also the only winless team remaining in the league. The Goats have played back-to-back scoreless ties, last at Vancouver Whitecaps FC.

Fraser continues to put his mark on the team and the bright side of goalkeeper Dan Kennedy posting two straight shutouts is a positive note. Chivas hopes to end its early-season woes against San Jose, but goals are a must.

After scoring two goals in a season-opening loss to Sporting Kansas City, the Goats have scored just one in their last four matches, a trend Fraser knows he needs Chivas (0-2-3) to end this weekend.

"For a team that is young and building, we continue to see more and more positives," Fraser said. "In every game that we've played this year, we've had stretches of possession and we've dominated at times, but we struggle to turn possession into good chances."
