Seattle hopes to build on N.Y. win against Revs

Jun 24, 2011 - 10:35 PM Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Seattle Sounders FC began the CenturyLink Field era with an impressive win over Red Bull New York in front of 46,065 fans, and return to the field formerly known as Qwest on Sunday to play New England.

While Seattle (7-4-7) is riding a five-game unbeaten streak on the heels of an exciting 4-2 win over New York, New England (3-7-6) has dropped its last five road games and is winless away from home in seven games this season.

Erik Friberg and Osvaldo Alonso scored one-minute apart in the first half, and Roger Levesque answered two straight goals from New York with a second-half brace, as Seattle moved into a tie for second place in the Western Conference.

"I got in two good spots and the ball went in. If you always find yourself in front of the goalie, you give yourself a good chance," Levesque told Seattle's website.

Levesque scored the game-winner off a glancing header at the near post to give Seattle its third goal off a corner kick, then added his second goal, and just the fifth of his career, off a mistake by goalie Greg Sutton.

Sutton failed to control a back pass and Levesque gained possession and scored into an empty net, sealing Seattle's win.

Now the Sounders will try to run their unbeaten streak to six matches, and win for the fourth time during the stretch. Seattle has also downed Toronto FC and Real Salt Lake during the undefeated run.

In addition to its road woes, New England is winless in six straight overall and has just one win since April 30, going just 1-5-3 in its last nine games.

Steve Nicol's club has scored just 12 goals in 16 games this year, easily the lowest total in MLS. With Sunday's game starting a stretch of five of six away from home, New England's problems are likely to continue.

But Nicol believes his club has played well, it just hasn't earned points, and the possible return of Benny Feilhaber from an ankle injury could only help.

"Every game we've played, we've been competitive," Nicol said on the club's website. "The games we have lost, we've lost by a goal.

"I guess you need to ask the opposition how much they're looking forward to us coming to play them. I guess that?s the only way I can describe it, really."
