Loyd, John lead Dallas to 4-0 win over Portland

Jun 26, 2011 - 2:44 AM Frisco, TX (Sports Network) - FC Dallas' defense also provided its offense Saturday night against the Portland Timbers.

Defenders Zach Loyd and George John scored in a five-minute span of the first half and Dallas posted its eighth shutout of the season to beat Portland, 4-0, in Major League Soccer at Pizza Hut Park.

Brek Shea and Ruben Luna added goals in the second half for Dallas.

Dallas (9-4-4) rebounded from last weekend's 4-1 loss to Sporting Kansas City - which snapped its nine-match unbeaten run - with its ninth win of the season to tie the Los Angeles Galaxy for the most victories in MLS this season.

Portland (5-7-3) remained winless away from home, losing for the fifth time in seven road games this season. The Timbers are also winless in five consecutive matches, with four of those being losses.

Dallas took the lead in the 34th minute when Daniel Hernandez sent a pass into the area off a corner, and Loyd converted with a header from the right side of the six-yard box to the bottom-left corner for his first goal of the season.

Hernandez set up the second goal five minutes later, also off a cross from a corner kick, and John converted with a header from the middle of the area to the bottom-right corner for his second goal of the season.

Dallas just missed a third goal before half when defender Jackson sent a left- footed shot off the right post, then Eric Alexander found the left post after half, but Shea helped put the match away in the 58th.

Shea converted a right-footed shot from the middle of the area for his seventh goal of the season, which moved him to within one goal of the MLS lead. Luna followed with his first goal of the season in the 85th when he headed into the net from just inches off the line.

Kevin Hartman, who has played every match for Dallas this year, made just two saves to post the shutout.

Dallas hosts the Columbus Crew in its next game on July 2, when Portland hosts Sporting Kansas City in its next match.
