America to face Tigres in Liga MX final
Dec 8, 2014 - 4:17 PM Mexico City, Mexico (SportsNetwork.com) - The top two teams in the Liga MX playoffs will square off in the final as America and Tigres both finished their respective semifinal second legs in 0-0 draws.America entered its second leg match against Monterrey on Sunday in a comfortable position having claimed a 3-0 first-leg win thanks to a brace from Luis Mendoza.
And that lead was never seriously threatened as the top seed coasted through 90 minutes against Monterrey, which failed to score in 180 minutes of play.
The other semifinal failed to produce a goal in either leg, but Tigres goes through to the final over Toluca because of the club's better regular-season record.
Toluca finished the match with nine men as both Jeronimo Amione and Richard Ortiz were sent off in the closing minutes with the visiting side desperately pressing for a goal.
The first leg of the final will take place on Thursday, Dec. 11 with Tigres hosting America, while the return leg shifts to Mexico City on Sunday, Dec. 14.
