Jones scores 19 for Sun in 71-58 win

Jun 21, 2009 - 10:05 PM UNCASVILLE, Conn.(AP) -- Asjha Jones had 19 points and six rebounds to help the Connecticut Sun beat the San Antonio Silver Stars 71-58 Sunday.

Sophia Young scored 22 points for San Antonio (1-3), which was without Becky Hammon, who was playing for Russia at a tournament in Latvia. The Silver Stars also were without Vickie Johnson due to a death in the family and Shanna Crossley, who was injured.

"I thought we competed well in our situation, but Connecticut played well enough to win," San Antonio coach Dan Hughes said. "They did a good job of having timely plays. Their ability to get to the glass was probably the separation factor today."

The Sun outrebounded the Silver Stars 38-31.

"We stayed resilient and made some plays down the stretch," Connecticut coach Mike Thibault said.

Erin Phillips scored six of her 11 points in the fourth period for Connecticut (3-3) and rookie center Chante Black had 11 points and eight rebounds before leaving with a sprained elbow in the third quarter.

Ruth Riley had 10 points and seven rebounds for San Antonio.

San Antonio, which went the first 3:21 of the final period without scoring, got to within eight points before Kerri Gardin's 3-pointer with 3:50 left gave the Sun a 65-54 lead.

The Sun used an 11-2 run to end the first half and take a 39-31 lead at halftime.
