Grieb, SaberCats win Arena Bowl XXI
Jul 29, 2007 - 10:13 PM NEW ORLEANS (Ticker) -- Mark Grieb led the San Jose SaberCats to their third championship in seven years.Grieb threw four touchdown passes as the SaberCats cruised to their 12th straight victory, a 55-33 triumph over the Columbus Destroyers in Arena Bowl XXI at New Orleans Arena.
The 33-year-old Grieb, who is the highest-rated quarterback in the history of the AFL, completed 24-of-29 passes for 218 yards.
Grieb, who was the starting quarterback the last time San Jose won the Arena Bowl in 2004, tossed two scores in the first half and Trestin George returned a kickoff 56 yards for a touchdown as the SaberCats enjoyed a 27-14 advantage heading into the break.
Rodney Wright had 10 receptions for 94 yards and James Roe added 76 yards on eight catches with two scores for San Jose, which had never won at New Orleans Arena before.
Brian Johnson rushed for two touchdowns for the SaberCats, who are now 7-0 all-time against the Destroyers.
Matt Nagy passed for 203 yards and four touchdowns but was intercepted twice.
Damien Groce had 10 catches for 99 yards and a score for the Destroyers, who finished the season with a 7-9 record and entered the contest winning four consecutive games - all on the road.
