Moore leads No. 11 Purdue past No. 2 Ohio State

Feb 21, 2011 - 5:34 AM West Lafayette, IN (Sports Network) - E'Twaun Moore finished with a career- high 38 points on 13-of-18 from the field to vault the 11th-ranked Purdue Boilermakers over No. 2 Ohio State, 76-63, at Mackey Arena.

"I played off my teammates," Moore said. "I was playing in our offense and because my teammates were aggressive, I had a chance at open shots."

JaJuan Johnson added 13 points and six rebounds while Lewis Jackson contributed nine points for Purdue (22-5, 11-3 Big Ten), which has won four straight and five of six overall.

Winning on the road has become an issue for Ohio State recently. In a season where they began 24-0 overall and 8-0 as the visitors, the Buckeyes have now dropped two of their last three overall and back-to-back contests away from home.

Jared Sullinger paced Ohio State (25-2, 12-2) with 25 points. Jon Diebler added 11 while Aaron Craft and David Lighty both finished with 10 points in the loss.

"Every loss is difficult," Ohio State coach Thad Matta said. "That was an incredible environment and an incredible college basketball game. This is what the sport is all about."

Leading 37-33 at the half, Purdue was unable to create some distance in the opening minutes of the second half until Kelsey Barlow's jumper at 15:47 started an 8-0 run, capped by Moore's basket at 12:24, giving the Boilermakers a 52-42 lead.

The Purdue lead remained around 10 until Lighty made a pair from the line just over the eight minute mark, and a Sullinger basket and three-point conversion cut the Boilermakers lead to five, 56-51.

That was as close as the Buckeyes would get as Purdue quickly widened its advantage back to 10 and maintained the lead around that number down the stretch.

"To beat a team like Ohio State someone has to be special," Purdue coach Matt Painter said. "Tonight that was [Moore]."

Sullinger scored six of the Buckeyes first 13 points as Ohio State held an early 13-10 lead five minutes in. A Barlow jumper at 13:09 cut the Ohio State lead to one, and both teams went cold from the field until Travis Carroll's jumper with 11 1/2 remaining gave Purdue their first lead of the game, 16-15.

After trading the lead in the following minutes, Moore sank a three-pointer at 2:41 to give Purdue a 32-28 lead. The basket capped a 8-0 Boilermaker run -- all from Moore -- and also made him the fifth player in Purdue history to eclipse the 2000 point mark for his career (2,002).

Craft ended the Purdue run with a jumper, but Moore continued his stellar first half with another basket from beyond the arc to widen the Boilermakers lead to five, 35-30, with just under a minute remaining in the first half.

Lighty and Moore exchanged baskets in the final minute and the Boilermakers took a 37-33 lead into the half. Moore paced Purdue with 18 points on 7-of-10 from the field including 4-of-6 from three point range.
