Top-ranked North Carolina opens season against Davidson

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) - Tyler Hansbrough and the top-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels will open its season on Wednesday against the reigning Southern Conference champion Davidson Wildcats.

The Tar Heels return three starters from last season's 31-win team, including Hansbrough, who was a National Player of the Year Finalist last season. The 6-9 junior averaged 18.4 points and 7.9 rebounds during the 2006-07 campaign.

Along with Hansbrough, the Tar Heels also return Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington to the backcourt. The duo combined to average 21.9 points per game, while Lawson was named to the Atlantic Coast Conference All-Freshman team last season.

Davidson defeated Emory, 120-56, in its season opener on Friday and is led by sharp-shooter Stephen Curry.

Curry led five Wildcats in double figures with 27 points, going 5-of-8 from the arc. The 6-0 sophomore was a star in his freshman season as he helped Davidson to its second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance last season, averaging 21.5 points per game.

North Carolina is 60-11 all-time against Davidson. The Wildcats last defeated the Tar Heels on November 20, 2002 in Chapel Hill.
