Favre seeks first win against Chiefs
Nov 4, 2007 - 11:54 AM Green Bay (6-1) at Kansas City (4-3) Sunday 1:00 pm EDTKANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- In his storied 17-year career, Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre has won an NFL-record 153 games. None have come against the Kansas City Chiefs.
On Sunday, the NFC North-leading Packers conclude a two-game road swing against the Chiefs, who are the only team Favre never has beaten.
Favre is 0-3 against Kansas City, including a 40-34 overtime loss in the last meeting between the teams at Lambeau Field in 2003.
That was a painful defeat for Favre, as the Chiefs rallied from a 17-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie the game on Morten Andersen's 31-yard field goal with one second left in regulation.
Four years later, Favre is the chief architect of what is becoming a storybook season for the Packers, who at 6-1 are tied with the Dallas Cowboys for the best record in the NFC.
Last week, Favre added another chapter to his legend, throwing an 82-yard touchdown pass to Greg Jennings on the first play of overtime to give Green Bay a 19-13 victory over the Denver Broncos.
Denver forced overtime on Jason Elam's 21-yard field goal as time expired. But the Packers were fortunate to get to the extra period, as the Broncos failed to convert a 2nd-and-1 at Green Bay's 4-yard line in the final minute.
"I keep saying winning games ugly, winning games like that in overtime build character," Favre said. "I don't see how they don't. "I have no idea how we'll do the rest of the year, but it's sure been a hell of a ride up till now."
The win might have been ugly, but it gave Favre only the third 6-1 start of his career.
He also started 6-1 in 1996, when Green Bay won its last Super Bowl title, then matched it in 2002. That season, the Packers lost in the divisional round of the playoffs to the Atlanta Falcons and their young quarterback, Michael Vick.
Coming off their bye week, the Chiefs have won four of their last five following an 0-2 start to take over first place in the AFC West.
Kansas City is looking to duplicate last year's feat, when it made the playoffs after losing its first two games.
Of the 10 teams who started this season with a pair of losses, the Chiefs and the New York Giants (6-2) are the only ones with winning records.
Overall, Kansas City has won five straight against Green Bay and leads the all-time series, 6-2-1.
The most famous meeting between the teams came in Super I, with the Packers posting a 35-10 victory.
