Favre rallies Packers past Chiefs

Nov 5, 2007 - 12:16 AM By Marc Bowman PA SportsTicker Contributing Writer

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers continued to roll on the road.

Favre threw two touchdowns, including the go-ahead score in the fourth quarter, to rally the Packers to a 33-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

It was the Packers' sixth consecutive road win, tying the second-longest streak in franchise history. Green Bay (7-1) also has won three straight overall to remain atop the NFC North Division.

"If I knew how, I would bottle it up and sell it," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "Basically, it's just a great bunch of guys. They prepare and focus, and week in, week out, somebody has stepped up to the plate to find different ways to win."

"I have no idea why," Favre said of the Packers' road success. "We had numerous opportunities to fold. We had numerous opportunities to win."

Favre connected on a 60-yard pass to Greg Jennings to put Green Bay on top, 23-22, with 3:05 left in the game.

"We were in a four-wide or a five-wide set," Jennings said. "I thought if I can get behind (Chiefs LB Donnie) Edwards, I knew if I could out run him, and beat him to where I needed to be, Brett would find me."

"As I left the huddle and lined up in the shotgun, I looked up and it kind of dawned on me that Greg was running right down the middle of the field with a linebacker," Favre said. "I think that is a mismatch. I was just nervous when I threw it. I threw it way before he looked. It just happened to work out."

After forcing a three-and-out on their next defensive possession, the Packers tacked on some insurance with Mason Crosby's 45-yard field goal with 1:40 left.

Green Bay sealed the victory with 59 seconds remaining, when cornerback Charles Woodson intercepted Damon Huard and returned it for a 46-yard touchdown, pushing the Packers' lead to 33-22.

"You just try to read formations and understand the situations and what the guy is going to try to do," Woodson said. "I knew he would try to run a dig or run a stop route over the quarterback. I was just right there on him."

"Those are two of the better corners in the league," Huard said, referring to Woodson and Al Harris. "All they do is play man coverage and they're really aggressive."

The 38-year-old Favre completed 14-of-34 passes for 360 yards and two interceptions.

Jennings caught both touchdown passes. The first was a 13-yard catch which gave the Packers a 13-7 lead with 11 seconds left in the third quarter.

Favre's second interception led to the Chiefs' first touchdown, as safety Bennie Sapp returned the pick to the Packers' 30-yard line with 25 seconds left in the first half.

"I don't second guess (the interception) one bit," Favre said. "It is easy to second guess and say we should have just run the time off. We had three timeouts left. We had enough room to move the ball and get a chance for a field goal. I got hit just as I threw it. I could not put any more into it."

After a pass interference call against Atari Bigby put the ball at the Green Bay 1-yard line, Larry Johnson punched it in for a 7-6 lead with 15 seconds left in the half.

Johnson's second touchdown - a 30-yard reception from Huard - capped a 74-yard drive which put Kansas City ahead 14-13 with 11:11 remaining. Johnson left the game with a right ankle injury in the fourth quarter. He was replaced by Priest Holmes.

After Huard hit Tony Gonzalez with a 17-yard touchdown pass, Holmes carried the ball in for a two-point conversion to make it 22-16 with 3:34 left in the game.

"I'm satisfied with what I did, but maybe I could do more," Gonzalez said. "I wish, offensively, we could have gotten more points early in the game. Maybe it would have been a different outcome."

"They did a great job of stopping the run, but Tony Gonzalez did his thing and made a bunch of plays for us," Huard said.

Crosby's third field goal - this one from 32 yards - gave the Packers a 16-14 lead with 8:52 to play. His 48-yard field goal gave the Packers a 3-0 lead with 14:52 left in the second quarter.

Crosby added another field goal from 36 yards to make the score 6-0 with 1:22 left in the first half. Crosby also missed from 52 yards late in the third quarter.

Huard finished 19-for-32 for 213 yards, two TDs and two interceptions while Gonzalez had 10 catches for 109 yards for Kansas City (4-4).

"We had our chances," Huard said. "We had some good drives, some good plays, and the turnovers. We had our chance there at the end and didn't get it done. They just made more plays than we did down the stretch."
