Boca, River play to draw in Superclasico
Oct 7, 2014 - 3:18 PM Buenos Aires, Argentina (SportsNetwork.com) - River Plate and Boca Juniors battled to a 1-1 draw in the latest edition of the Superclasico, keeping River on top of the league.Heavy rains throughout the match made conditions a bit difficult, but the game still managed to produce two goals and two red cards as the two fierce rivals shared the spoils.
Boca jumped in front after 22 minutes when a free kick from Federico Carrizo picked out Lisandro Magallan in the middle of the box, allowing him to find the bottom corner of the net from 12 yards.
Gabriel Mercado nearly equalized for River in the 32nd, but his header struck the left post, while Rodrigo Mora wasted an even better opportunity to equalize.
Boca was reduced to 10 men shortly before halftime when a shot from River's Ariel Rojas struck the arm of Fernando Gago on its way to goal, earning Gago a red card and handing Mora a chance to level the match from the spot, which he wasted by blasting his shot over the net.
German Pezzella finally equalized for River 12 minutes from time as his header was saved by Boca goalkeeper Agustin Orion, only for Pezzella to follow up the play and score on the rebound.
Gimnasia LP started the weekend on Friday with a 2-0 win over Velez Sarsfield behind first-half goals from Pablo Vegetti and Nacho, moving the club into the middle of the table.
Belgrano claimed a 2-2 draw at Banfield thanks to a goal from Emiliano Rigoni 10 minutes from time, Tigre doubled up on San Lorenzo, 2-0, with Lucas Wilchez opening the scoring on the half-hour mark before Sebastian Rincon added a second goal 11 minutes from time, while Defensa y Justicia rallied for a 2-1 win over Arsenal with goals from Brian Fernandez and Emiliano Tellechea seven minutes apart.
Atletico Rafaela moved into the top four following a 2-0 win over Racing courtesy of goals from Sergio Vittor and Guillermo Fernandez in the final 12 minutes.
Estudiantes held off Olimpo, 2-1, Quilmes and Newell's battled to a 1-1 draw, and on Monday, Lanus claimed a 2-1 win at Rosario Central while Godoy Cruz and Independiente split the points in a 2-2 draw.
