River Plate stretches lead at top of Apertura

Oct 14, 2014 - 4:45 PM Buenos Aires, Argentina (SportsNetwork.com) - River Plate moved four points clear at the top of Argentina's Apertura standings thanks to a 1-0 win over Newell's with Ramiro Mori scoring the lone goal in the 68th minute.

Second-place Lanus was held to a 3-3 draw by Godoy Cruz on Friday, leaving River with the chance to extend its lead at the top of the table with three points on Sunday.

And after waiting 67 minutes for the breakthrough, River edged in front as Leonardo Pisculichi's cross found the head of Mori, who turned his effort into the bottom left corner.

Lanus took a 2-0 lead at home against Godoy on Friday thanks to goals from Victor Ayala and Santiago Silva.

Godoy put together a furious rally to go up 3-2 with three goals in the span of 13 second-half minutes, but Silvio Romero rescued a point for his side with the equalizer 12 minutes from time.

Third-place Independiente fell five points back of River Plate after a 1-1 draw with Defensa y Justicia. Defensa took a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute through Mariano Barbieri, but Independiente was able to salvage a point through Sebastian Penco's stoppage-time equalizer.

Carlos Luna converted a penalty kick in the 54th minute to lift Tigre to a 1-0 win over Gimnasia LP, Velez Sarsfield cruised to a 4-1 win over Olimpo, Quilmes and Belgrano traded second-half goals in a 1-1 draw, while Gustavo Bou scored a goal in each half as Racing rolled to a 4-0 win at Estudiantes.

Banfield came from two goals down in the opening 20 minutes to earn a 2-2 draw at Atletico Rafaela as Ricardo Noir and Nicolas Tagliafico scored for Banfield, Boca Juniors rallied for a 2-1 win over Rosario Central with goals from Mariano Echeverria and Leandro Marin in the final 15 minutes after Rosario's Lucas Acevedo was sent off in the 62nd minute, while on Monday, San Lorenzo and Arsenal played to a 0-0 draw to remain level in the table with 14 points apiece.
